How to Organize a Seminar or an Event

Seminars and events have always been implemented as a holistic experience to participants. Thus, organizing an event requires extensive planning and preparation with most work implemented at least a few months before the actual event. Most of the time, seminars seem to run like clockwork with all events flowing smoothly according to schedule. In reality however, much groundwork has been worked on with the purpose of developing the right atmosphere in addition to a beneficial experience to partipants.

1. Establishing the theme of the event

Posters

Each event follows a theme and purpose which will drive the event set-up, the target audiences or the participants, the guests and the marketing approach. In general, a business event such as an international conference for a particular industry will appeal to participants conducting businesses within that industry as well as sponsors who gain mileage out of publicizing their products during the event.

Apart from that, the theme of the seminar will also determine the type of marketing channels to be used to for publicity. This also holds true for the seminar marketing team who will need the event theme to correctly identify target participants and companies to sell the event to.

2. Selecting a venue

Venue selection is highly dependent on the scale of the event. Usually this is determined by the number of participants, the presence of any guests of honor (such as royalty or politicians) the activities during the event, or if there are additional floor space required for exhibition purposes.

A typical seminar of about 100 - 200 can be comfortably implemented in a hotel seminar room, possibly in a theater style setting or classroom setting. However, larger scale events with participant numbers scaling between 500 - 1000 may require a large hall, ballroom, auditorium or a convention center.

The location and quality standard of the venue is also important especially if the event involves the participation of VIPs. With this, a reputable location would be imperative, including good quality and wide range of seminar facilities available. It is always wise to explore the possibility of a few venues and examine their location suitability, level of services, ambience, and costs before coming to a decision.

3. Seminar Marketing and Publicity

Seminar marketing is by far the most critical and often most challenging task in event organizing, and is often regarded as the most critical factor of an event's success. This is because the number of participants turning up for a seminar is highly dependent on the strength of marketing activities and publicity. Whether or not the event achieves its objective or whether the organizers will walk home with a profit or loss largely depends on the marketability of the event. This means that the right marketing strategy and seminar positioning must be adopted in order to draw adequate event sign-ups.

Most of the time, event organizers who have large budgets will turn to above the line marketing such as newspaper and magazine advertisements as well as radio and television advertising to publicize the event. Press releases may also be sent in to major newspapers, in order to create the awareness of the upcoming event. Additionally, large advertising media banners and posters can also be purchased to advertise the event in high human traffic areas. When using print advertising, the specific magazine or newspaper used must have the target audience of your event as their primary readership base. Also all print media should be copy written with an enticing approach, highlighting the extensive benefits of participation.

However, if budget is a problem, then below the line marketing may also do wonders. If the event is industry specific, mass faxing to companies belonging to the industry would be feasible. Telemarketing is a very effective marketing channel to create awareness within the right participant group. Additionally, dispatching sales personnel to attend to the requirements of large participant groups is an ideal and effective strategy. Mass emailing has become one of the most cost-efficient methods to reach out to large target audiences. This would be really useful if the event organizer already have an existing database. Otherwise, a list of names can be rented from database companies to attain the same results.

4. Collaboration with sponsors

Getting reputable sponsors to participate in an event will help boost the creditability of the event, as well as reduce costs. Sponsors can also help with marketing, as they also help publicize your event to their customers. Apart from that, some of the sponsors can chip in on venue rental in exchange for exhibition space or publicity for themselves. Some sponsors also require a short message of their company to be given to the participants during the event. Others give away sample products or door gifts to participants.

5. Managing People and working with speakers

A seminar will not be successful without the people running it, as well as the speakers sharing their knowledge to the participants. Invite speakers who are of caliber and reputation to the event, and who will provide the participants with relevant information to their work, industry or business. Prepare the speakers beforehand and work with them on their Power point presentations as well as pre-inform them of the logistics processes, timing as well as the expected audience size. Check with them on any special requests, such as the requirement for an overhead projector or additional microphones to be used for question and answer sessions.

All events require a good team of people handling tasks on ushering, registration, customer service as well as handling financials. Familiarize the team with any required event protocol to eliminate the possibility of confusion or error. In order to ensure smooth implementation, each person should be familiar with their individual roles. This can be ensured through a preparation of a detailed schedule of events coupled with roles and responsibilities for each person. Ideally, a project manager should control the whole team and ensure that everyone is carrying out their duties efficiently. Apart from that, the project manager also has the delegated authority to deal with all parties such as the venue management as well as the sponsors and event exhibitors.

6. Actual Day - Preparation, Registration, Ushering, Feedback

All seminar planning and preparations, constituting 80% of total work involved, cascade to the actual event which may last only for a few hours or a few days. On the day before the event, visit the venue to ensure that everything is in order according the requirements and specifications. Microphones, projectors, audio and video systems must be all checked to be in excellent working order. Over at the office, have a packing list prepared and get all require items transferred to the actual venue at least a day before the event. Event staff should be dispatched to work on site preparations, including setting up booths, decorations and posters, the day before the event.

On the actual day, staff should be present at the venue at least 1 ½ hours before commencement. They should report to their duty stations and must be ready to receive participants half an hour before they are scheduled to file in. Registrations must be made at the door to ensure authorized access. Name tags, door gifts and event schedules or booklets will be given out at this point and ushers will show participants to their seats in the event hall.

Staff will also be responsible for providing advice or help to participants during the event. Finally, feedback forms should be distributed and then collected from participants to determine the satisfaction level on all aspects of the event experience. This is in order to receive pointers, ideas and advice for future improvements.

Design Polls - The Right One Can Make All the Difference

Polls are tricky beasts; the right one can give you valuable insight into the opinions to which you might not otherwise have been privy. The wrong one, however, can give you an incomplete or even entirely misleading push in the wrong direction. That's why, if you work in a creative field, finding the right design polls can mean the difference between success and failure.

Questions are the blueprints of design polls. If you find a poll that asks the right ones, the information you gain can help give you a measure of objectivity that's difficult to have about your own work. You can find out what your target audience thinks, likes and buys -- and how to give it to them. Thorough knowledge of current trends and perceptions can help bolster and root your artistic visions.

Artist

If that "knowledge" is faulty, however, it can be far worse than having none at all. Shoddy design polls ask misleading questions to the wrong people. Shifting your personal style to incorporate this misinformation can lead to a situation where nobody is happy; your art has been compromised, and the public you thought would love your work is unenthusiastic at best, derisive at worst. To consult the wrong design polls is to actively sabotage your own chances at success. In a world as fickle as art, this can be nigh impossible to recover from.

Information is the basis of all decisions, and having the proper information can ensure you make the best possible ones. If you work in a high-pace world like design, polls aren't just helpful -- they're critical.

Native American Indian Art Wood Carvings of the Pacific Northwest

Native American Indian art in the American southwest is dominated by the magnificent pottery and jewelry in the region. When it comes to the Pacific Northwest region which covers the states of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia (Canada) and the southern part of Alaska, the Native American art here is mostly wood carvings. This is not surprising since unlike the southwest desert, the Pacific Northwest is abundant with forests which have provided the wood as raw material for the region's Native American Indian art.

The wood carvings of the Pacific Northwest Native American art come in many different forms. The huge totem poles which are carved on entire tree trunks are probably the most famous. Certainly the most common form of contemporary Pacific Northwest Native American art is the plaque wood carving. The entire range of Pacific Northwest Native American Indian art subjects including eagles, ravens, thunderbirds, bears, killer whales and salmons are carved as plaques to be hung on the wall. A more complex project and usually higher priced would be the masks which are also carved out of wood. The Pacific Northwest Native American artists make some of the most striking aboriginal masks in the world.

Art

Creative artists and carvers from this region have also used wood to carve out bowls, paddles, rattles and boxes which are all expertly decorated with Pacific Northwest Native American Indian designs. Some carvers have even carved more day to day objects such as letter openers out of wood again decorated with the region's Native motifs. Although not restricting themselves to just wood, the Pacific Northwest Native American artists also do art prints, paintings and precious metal jewelry but overall wood is still the most common material used in their artwork.

The Pacific Northwest style of Native American Indian art is still unknown to many parts of North America and the rest of the world but this will definitely change as the 2010 winter Olympics in British Columbia approaches. The world will see British Columbia and as visitors to this Canadian province have already noticed, there are fine examples of Pacific Northwest Native American Indian art everywhere one goes in the west coast of Canada.

Her Most Famous Painting (Oriental Poppies) - Georgia O'Keeffe

The American painter Georgia O'Keeffe (November 1887-March 1986) was a pioneering 'Modernist.' Her unique approach defied all the accepted norms of painting and gave a new definition to the 'American Modern Art.' Owing to her competence, American Art attained fame and recognition in creatively competent Europe. Flowers fascinated Georgia and they were her favorite subject on canvas. O'Keeffe painted "Oriental Poppies" in 1928. This stunning work was declared a groundbreaking, art masterpiece.

Georgia O'Keeffe described her painting as a product of what she perceived in her mind and felt in her heart. In "Oriental Poppies," she depicts two giant poppy flowers. Measuring 30" x 40", this oil painting is an explosion of brilliant colors on a vast canvas, lending a mesmerizing effect. O'Keefe used dazzling red and orange as the main color of the petals. The hollowed centre and the inner contours of the flowers are painted in deep purple. The skillful shading and velvety finish of the petals accentuates the vibrancy of the flowers. "Oriental Poppies" almost looks like a close up photograph. O'Keeffe did not give any background to the painting, to artfully draw focus onto the flowers. The absence of context in the painting presents them in a new light as pure abstracts. "Oriental Poppies" exudes a startling pull, as if casting a hypnotic spell on the viewer.

Painting

Georgia O'Keeffe believed that due to the fast-paced lives people live, they merely glance at flowers, but never really observed their exquisiteness. She wished to give such rushing people experience and the feel of the true beauty of flowers. In her words, "If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it no one would see what I see because I would paint it small like the flower is small. So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers." O'Keeffe chose to paint on a huge canvas with an outburst of bold colors, to astonish the viewers and to introduce them to the wonder of nature. In her bid, she managed to capture the essence of poppies with eloquence.

Many art researchers believed that O'Keeffe's "Oriental Poppies" was an answer to the zoomed in technique adapted by Alfred Stieglitz in 'Modern Photography.' The magnificent painting speaks volumes of O'Keefe's talent and artistic vision. Georgia's delightful representation of two ordinary flowers generated widespread admiration and was considered as one of her most memorable works. It is now a part of a collection at the University of Minnesota Art Museum, Minneapolis.

Live Happily Ever After Checklist - 5 Simple Steps

"...they lived happily ever after" Is that just for fairy tales?

In 20+ years of teaching art to adults, I've seen major life transitions successfully weathered. Happiness lost and regained. I've distilled these into the following article and wish that it makes the happiest and best Christmas and holiday season for you.

Arts

No matter what life has thrown at you, whatever the barrier to enjoying life has been in the past, you have the power to identify it, fire it, and replace it with something good.

You can live happily ever after. You deserve to. Let the sun shine in and get strength from the following checklist to your happily ever after life.

1. LIVE WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE STARTING NOW

a. One thing everyone agrees on, especially after 18, life is short. Nothing and no one has the right to deprive you of the joy of living a full life every day.

b. Appreciate the time, health and creative spirit you do have as uniquely special.

c. Don't listen to negativity, from the TV, or anyone. Believe in yourself, in your basic good. Find out what can be done to solve any problem standing in the way of a better self. Enlist family or friends to work through it, as quickly as possible.

d. It's alright to ask for help from above. God always listens and has time for you.

2. EACH DAY IS A CREATIVE OPPORTUNITY--ARE YOU HAVING FUN YET?

a. If money could buy happiness, all Lottery winners should be ecstatic, right? Happiness is not buyable, or passive. You create it. It's a by-product of believing in yourself and doing good for someone else, as in the short story, "The Gift of the Maji", by O. Henry.

b. This may sound corny, but it's often the simple, overlooked things that make a whole, satisfying day. Make it a point to to do a good deed daily, just be polite, or encourage someone. See how good that makes you feel! You will find a slice of every day where you can give a little, and that will give you a lift as well.

c. Be considerate and patient with yourself and others. Keep your sense of humor and do your best. Happiness is both a journey and a destination.

3. YOU ARE THE EXPERT ON YOU

a. In the rush to "be somebody", have you put aside "you"-- that one gift that makes you special? Identify that something you enjoyed doing so much you lost track of time; and,

b. Take the time to develop it. Working toward that goal will be satisfying in itself, so enjoy it!

4. PUT YOUR TIME AND TALENT AT THE SERVICE OF OTHERS

a. Do a little research and find your "happiness" home. Where does your gift fit? The place or group where you are comfortable, appreciated, and can share with others on a continuing basis.

b. Prefer one-on-one? Available just to listen? Listening is truly a lost art. So many children and adults in schools and hospitals are desperate to talk to someone.

5. GIVE YOURSELF A REPORT CARD

a. Be open, flexible and look for ways to challenge your new self to new heights.

So, how do you like you so far? Too busy having fun? Sounds like you're living "happily ever after!"

Mucha Art

Mucha art represents everything produced from the career of Czech Art Nouveau artist and illustrator Alfons Mucha. This article covers Mucha art in full and examined the different types of art mediums that the artist used as well as detailing some of his finest prints and how best you can enjoy them yourself in your own home thanks to the great variety of reproduction options which are now available to art fans online all across the world.

Alfons Mucha was a consistent artist who developed a very unique and creative approach around the start of the 20th century and stuck very closely to this for the rest of the career. For this reason it is very easy to summarise his career into a clear style, with that being illustrative detailing decoratively surrounding the main focus of each work, which in most cases was a stylish portrait of a beautiful woman. Mucha's art style was clear and immediately accessible, though one diversion that some of his art would include was promotional typography to title the work and draw attention to a certain message or meaning.

Art

Alfons Mucha's artistic style is amongst the most important topic for study in art history of recent centuries and his approach helped to bring about the Art Nouveau movement which remains very popular today and includes several others key artists who followed in the footsteps of Mucha and produced a relatively similar style of art which allowed their careers to be categorised together. The fundamental point to Mucha art was great detail in illustration and an innovative style that was new at the time.

Mucha Art

Mucha art is displayed in an extensive paintings gallery at Muchaprints.com.
