Most people have heard of the Surrealism movement. Surrealism began in France, but soon spread throughout the world. It has influenced art, literature, culture, politics, music and films. Yet not everybody has much of an idea about what the Surrealism movement was and where it came from.

The Surrealism movement began in 1924 with the publication of a book written by a French poet named Andre Brenton. The book he published was called 'Manifeste du Surrealisme.' This book described how Surrealism can be applied to art, poetry and literature as well as any other aspect of life. Brenton believed that by contacting the subconscious part of the mind a person could access poetic and artistic truths.

Surrealism was influenced by the work of Sigmund Freud in that it attempted to express the subconscious mind. It was based on the belief that the imagination is expressed in dreams. Easy Pumpkin Painting and Design

Halloween is almost here and around where I live there are piles of pumpkins sitting on the front laws of farmers houses with signs indicating to leave a few dollars for each pumpkin. This always seems to be the start of the Halloween season and with that means easy pumpkin painting.

Below are a few ways to help you create an exciting Halloween experience this year for yourselves and your families by learning how to do some fast and easy pumpkin painting.

Painting

First of all, you will want to find some pumpkins that have a somewhat flat surface on one side of the pumpkin. This just makes it easier for younger kids to paint the pumpkins, it's not actually necessary for pumpkin painting.

After that, go to your local craft store and look for an acrylic paint. This is the easiest to use for pumpkin painting and often you can find acrylic paints in larger bottles, which means enough to go around for everyone. In addition, these are usually easy paints for kids to use and come in a wide variety of colors in case you or your kids want to get crazy with their pumpkin painting.

Next, you will want to think about what it is that you want to create. Be sure to include the kids in the step of the easy pumpkin painting process. Do you want something scary?-possibly something funny? Next drive them into the pumpkin on either side and when people ask you why you have corn stuck to the sides of your pumpkin, tell them that they are not corn- they are the pumpkins ears.

Free Face Painting Designs For Children

When I first decided to learn face painting, I looked all over for free face painting designs For children.

I went to the library, bookstores and searched the Internet. I had dabbled in One-Stroke Painting (a neat decorative painting technique made famous by Donna Dewberry) so I figured I could paint a kids' face at the same "pretty good" level that I could paint a mug for Father's Day. Um, not quite.

Painting

Once I really got into the research, I couldn't believe the level of artistry that was out there in Professional Face Painting. The world of Professional Face Painting was filled with real artists from all over the world. I'd never seen an island sunset painted on someone's face that looked so real I wanted to grab my coconut drink and head for the nearest hammock.

The designs were absolutely breathtaking, but not quite what I was looking for. I had fifteen three and five-year-olds coming over and I wanted to paint sweet little designs on their cheeks. Not to mention the attention span of a three-year-old didn't lend itself to a full-blown Caribbean sunset.

In the course of much more in depth research, I learned these basics:

- Use the right paints (in other words, if the packaging doesn't specifically say "face paints" or if they're for some other purpose besides face painting, don't use them on skin!)

- Use the right supplies (this includes brushes, sponges, glitter, etc.)

- Choose designs that are within your skill level and that are appropriate for your audience.

- When you are just starting out, choose just a handful (maybe five or six) designs and offer those to the children. Practice them religiously so that you can paint quickly and keep the line moving.

- Speed is key. Nuff said.

- The beauty is in the details. Small touches like glitter or highlighting can make a design from "okay" to "Wow!"

Convergence Jackson Pollock Painting

Jackson Pollock played a key role in the history of modern American art. He was especially influential in the abstract expressionist movement. Pollock used a style known as "drip" painting, and his creations came in both black and white and others with color right across each and every Pollock print.

Pollock's earlier paintings were predominantly in black and white including Number Twenty-Three, Echo and Number Seven. By 1952 he chose to switch back to his large-scale, full color formats with Convergence and Blue Poles.

Jackson Pollock's alcoholism and bouts of intensive depression added to his fame across America, as he continued to paint in order to break away and distract himself from his own social problems. Van Gogh and many other artists have done similar. He sought therapy through his novel approach of drip painting, which included Number 1 (Lavender Mist).

Convergence displays Pollock's emotions in abstract form, and shows them to be wild, with his innovative, multi-levelled imagination on full show. It was the best art form that he could find to thoroughly represent his turbulent mind which both haunted him, but also drove him to his best art.

Jackson Pollock had a unique method for creating his masterpieces, by circling around a huge canvas laid flat on the floor, as he would drip, pour and splash paints randomly on the canvas. This has since been termed action painting. Each painting would have large amounts of randomness, encouraged by his unconscious mind, with no consistent subject from one painting to the next. It was the birth of abstract painting as Pollock's subconscious became unravelled in a fusion of works offering his freedom of imagination as a bizarre art form.

Another attraction to Convergence is Pollock's suggestion that being an artist does not require certain technical skills and that all can access art themselves. He opened up art through the abstract movement which educated people into believing in the freedom of art, rather than preset ideas.

Abstract artists of the time, such as Pollock and Rothko, believed that traditional art could not portray their emotions vividly enough and so they followed this innovative path which was later to bring American painting to the forefront of international art, and lead New York into replacing Paris as the leader of the avant-garde art world.

2. Who Ditty. Here you can search for a tune by lyrics, tags, artist, or even where you heard it. This site is a fabulous choice if you need to find a tune you heard somewhere specific, such as a television commercial or show, a movie, and so on. Once you find the song, you can also download it from the site.

3. Get Lyrical. This site has a large database and lets you search by lyrics, artist, song, or album. Note: Get Lyrical finds an exact match for your lyrics whereas Search Lyrics searches for those words anywhere in a particular song and will return a result even if the words are all not together.

4. Search Lyrics. One of the benefits of this site is that it also has some non-English lyrics. You can translate any of the English lyrics to another language on the lyric pages. Also keep in mind the note from site number three above.

5. LyricsFly. This site also found my test song, but you have to be sure to click on "lyrics" first and then perform a search to get the best results.

I've worked in some odd places in my life - from counting emeralds in a cutting laboratory to watching postmortems, so it should have come as no great surprise to me that I found myself working on-site at a refurbishment project for a casino.

The designer for the ceiling revamp was professional by degree and no-one questioned his decision to hang the ceiling tiles with purlons. No-one, that is, until the ceiling tiles began to fall and hit one hapless gambler on the head, knocking him out. Slap bang in the middle of the project, the ceiling design had to go back to the drawing board.

If not even the professionals can always get it right, I would suggest that we stay away from DIY. A tiling course is the way to go. The Famous Optical Artist - Bridget Riley, An Op Art Pioneer

One of the major Optical Art (Op Art) proponents, British artist and printmaker Bridget Riley was born on the 24th of April, 1931 in London. Riley is most commonly known for her signature black and white oil paintings depicting geographic patterns that cause optical illusions which have become synonymous with the Op Art movement.

Bridget Riley was educated at the Royal College of Art from 1952 to 1955 and in these years her paintings were semi-impressionist and figurative. It was not until the 1960s that her signature style developed.

Bridget Riley's paintings also had another feature - the potential for increased audience participation in the appreciation or display of the work of art. This was a hot topic in the 60s, when many performances were being classified as "happenings." Happenings are unconventional and formless performances where audience involvement actually determines the course of the performance. Riley's oil paintings were in a sense dependent on what the individual experienced on viewing them. By 1967, Bridget Riley began to modify her style and thought of incorporating oil colour in her art. She began incorporating on colour stripes in an oil painting entitled "Paean" (1973), "Dominance Portfolio, Blue" (1977), "Ra2″ (1981) and "Silvered 2″ (1981). Crucial to this change was the extensive travelling she undertook from the 1970s. The hieroglyphic decorations she saw during her visit to Egypt played an important part in leading her to incorporate colour and contrast. Her later works are colourful and some of these bright paintings include "Fete" (1999), "Echo" (2000), "Carnival" (2000) and "Sylvan" (2000).

Among the other achievements of Bridget Riley is her distinction of becoming the first woman and British contemporary painter to receive the International Prize for painting at the 1968 Venice Biennale.
